Educators, individuals with disabilities, parents, family members, policy makers, service providers and all concerned citizens of Missouri are encouraged to search this site for answers to commonly asked questions and, for training material on the employment of individuals with disabilities. Working closely with individuals with disabilities and employers, the University of Missouri – Kansas City Institute for Human Development has gathered, compiled, and addressed an array of issues impacting the employment of individuals with disabilities. The university has captured for the readers federal regulations governing the employment of individuals with disabilities. An essential part and purpose of this website is to provide information on state, local and community based services which recruits, promotes, trains, and retrain individuals with disabilities as their mission in the creation of a more inclusive workforce for all who are willing, able and ready to work. Included also, are examples of best practices in various businesses that promote the employment of people with disabilities has been highlighted to encourage other businesses to hire individuals with disabilities. Employers are seeking individuals with abilities and willing to provide the necessary accommodations for persons with disabilities.

Visitors to this site are encouraged to learn about the complex laws affecting persons with disabilities and their families. It is the responsibility of the individual with disabilities to understand and know the appropriate manner to request reasonable accommodations. Self advocacy is also expected and embraced by employers within the culture of the company policies. Employers’ expectations for individuals with disabilities are not different from those of employees without disabilities.
