Navigating the Spectrum of Autism Services - Springfield - Sat Feb 11 2012 13:00

A SW Autism Network Event

On February 11, 2012 at 922 W. Republic Road, Dr. Grant will be presenting information to help us better understand some of the options that are available for treating autism. He will talk about 30 of the most popular evidence based treatment approaches that are available today. Dr. Grant has generously donated his service to offer this seminar free of charge.

Paint Among Friends has given SWAN a special discount that allows us to offer a special painting activity for children five and older while parents attend the seminar. If you would like your child to participate in this activity, you must R.S.V.P.! This special painting activity is $10.00 which will include a painting lesson, canvas, apron, paint and brushes for each child participating. This is regularly a $25.00 value! Normally, the painting activity is held at the Paint Among Friends studio...but the staff have generously agreed to bring the supplies to the children in respite while parents attend the seminar!

Fostering Self-Determination & Independence in Teens & Young Adults - St. Louis - Thu Feb 16 2012 18:30

This workshop will focus on how families can help teens and young adults develop goal-directed, self-regulated, independent behaviors needed for assuming greater responsibility over their lives. Topics will include the following: the concept of self-determination, what families can do to promote self-determination in teens and young adults, and how promoting self-determination can significantly improve a person’s self-esteem and self-worth, resulting in more productive outcomes. Families will also explore their fears and concerns as their child moves toward independence.

DSAGSL's 2012 Conference: Effective Strategies to Shape Behavior - St. Louis - Sat Feb 25 2012 08:30

Individuals with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities often engage in problem behaviors that can interfere with their learning and socialization with others. These behaviors can also impact the entire family. This workshop will provide parents and caregivers with a step by step process to assess and treat problem behaviors. Through discussion, lecture and video examples, participants will learn the basic principles of behavior and how to apply these principles to determine why the problem behaviors occur and to create effective plans for decreasing these behaviors. Participants will also learn how to prevent future problem behaviors by teaching new appropriate behaviors.

Session I will help families understand the DMH-Regional Office planning, funding and priority processes and the role of the service coordinator.

Lunch on your own from 12:00- 1:00 p.m.

1:00-3:00 p.m. – Session II
Session II will cover the importance of developing the personal plan in partnership with your service coordinator and how to use the plan to access community services.

Transitioning from First Steps to Regional Office Services - St. Louis - Tue Mar 27 2012 18:00

Children receiving First Steps services may need continued services once they turn 3 years of age. If so, children are usually referred to Missouri Department of Mental Health-Regional Office. This workshop will help families with children ages birth to 3, who are in the First Steps program, become familiar with the transition process and what to expect from DMH before, during and after the transition from to Regional Office services. Participating agencies include: Bureau of Special Health Care Needs, Healthy Children and Youth, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and SSI, Special School District, St. Louis Arc, St. Louis Regional Office and Vocational Rehabilitation.
